~Reading Log Day 7(Topic Choice 4): Death Cloud
The story is using the literary element of imagery as it is giving us a good pictore by using a lot of descriptiove words of the background. As seen on page 21 you can imagine, "...a dirt track that snacked away through the underbush, like a dry riverbed, intil it vanished from sight." This gives you a good picture of the background already. On the same page the story makes you imagine "Every so often there would be a rustling in the long grass as a mouse or a vole moved past, while hawks circled lazily in the blue sky above, to emerge into an area of clear ground." The author is using a lot of description to help us the reader to picture the background and help us imagine the story in our head as we read.

Sherlock is a 14 year old boy and is currently going to school. On page 9 of the story, it says, "Sherlock cast against the school gate." RIght now he lives a normal life and plans to go to vacation. Sherlock does not change but his life does change. His life changes out of nowhere by a mysterious murder that he then has to research. Evidence for this is found on the prologue where you can read "...Holmes throws himself into an investigation of what and who really killed them. This shows that Sherlock Holmes chose to investigate what killed the two men.

Conor has been having nightmares recently. He is very lonely and sad. He constantly has nightmares of a monster haunting him with his tru feelings and need for things to end. On the first page of the book it spells "He'd had a nightmare. Well, not a nightmare. The nightmare." This quote explains how Conor goes through a nightmare. Conor keeps getting this nightmare and at the end he has to face the nightmare. Conors nightmare says on page 185, "It is the truth, said the monster. You know it is. You let her go." The nightmare tells Conor the "truth." Througought the story Conor realizes what his nightmare meant and become more of an honest person.

The theme of the novel A Monster Calls is courage. This is the theme as Conor had to face his deepest thoughts that he wanted his pain to end so he let go of his mother. He didn't want to say it but he ended up admitting that he wanted it all to end which is why he let go of his mother. The explanation can be heard from the monster on page 190 where it says , "And a part of you wished it would just end, said the monster, even if it meant losing her." This quote shows the monster explaining the truth of Conor. Conor takes "...in a deep breath. And, at last, he spoke the final and total truth." on page 204. This quote shows how Conner ended up facing his worst fear and told his mother the truth.

On page 96 the Monster comes back to tell his it's second story. This scene is when the Monster talks about destruction. This is an important part as the main character, Conor, has started to cause some destruction in his house in order to find some satisfaction. Conor is interested in this story as he has felt an urge to cause destruction but at the same time he doesn't want the story to end as a "cheat." This scene can be called as the stories climax as his grandmother will arrive soon and see what Conor has done. The monster explains the story as, "It ends in proper destruction..." This quote shows the monster explaining what the story will be about. Also on page 111 Conor begins to yell "TEAR THE WHOLE THING DOWN!" This is an example of Conor asking the monster to destroy the house. The destruction is what Conor and the monster call a fair act.

The main conflict is that Conor has to live with his annoying grandmother because his mom is too weak to care for him. On page 42 it says, "His grandma crossed her arms. "About you coming to live with me." This explains that his grandma will live with Conor. Conor hates his grandma so he is listening to the stories of a monster for some advice. This conflict is an important event because it is the reason Conor is listening to the monster and why he is going through a hard time. On page 51 the monster says, "You felt the truth of it when I said you had called for me, that you were the reason I had come walking. Did you not?" What the monster meant is that Conor knows deep down inside that he called the monster for help. He would love to stay with his mother but his mom and his grandmother already agreed to send him. Conor reacts to it by going to a giant, ancient tree monster in seek of advice. The conflict is internal and personal because it is causing trouble on him mentally. To conclude, the current main conflict is Conor's grandmother, who he see's as an enemy, is going to take him with her.

Conor, the stories main character, is going through a lot of nightmares. The origin of these nightmares are from his depression of the hard time he is going through. On page 24 it says, "His father leaving. The cat wondering off one day and never coming back." This quote shows some of the things going on in his life. Page 1 says, "The one with the hands slipping from his grasp, no matter how hard he tried to hold on." This quote is about Conor explaining how his nightmares feel. To conclude, Conor's nightmares originate from the things that are going on in his life.
